Working ratio. Aim for roughly 1 gram kava per 1 ounce water for a robust communal bowl. In practice, hosts often use 100–130 g kava per 1 gallon (128 oz) warm water.
Steps (for 1 gallon / 3.8 L):

Warm the water to about 100–105°F. Add it to your bowl.

Put 100–130 g medium-grind kava into the straining bag and tie/zip it closed. Submerge the bag in the warm water.

Massage and knead the bag under water for 10–15 minutes, occasionally twisting and squeezing so the liquid goes cloudy and nutty-brown.

Lift, squeeze the bag dry, and set it aside. Pour the kava into a serving vessel. That’s your base bowl—ready for rounds.
Scaling up? Keep the same ratio. For 3 gallons (384 oz), use about 384 g kava; for 2 gallons, 256 g, and so on.
